“Shakespeare am Rhein” is a planned recurring and long standing Summer Event that deserves its place in the Düsseldorf calendar. Set along the Rhine river, the beautiful Kaiserpfalz Ruins in Kaiserswerth provides an impressive backdrop for Shakespeare productions, performed in their original language. “Shakespeare am Rhein” presents uniquely staged Shakespeare productions, performed by professional International actors from different corners of the globe, thus complimenting the already thriving International cultural scene the City of Düsseldorf has to offer.

Duncan’s heir, Malcolm, proposes radical changes from the militaristic, autocratic system, so Macbeth, buoyed on by a supernatural prophecy and the political ambitions of his wife, takes matters into his own hands. This scenic new production of Shakespeare's bloodiest tragedy draws on aesthetics and issues from Weimar Germany to explore ideas of succession, tyranny, and what happens when individual leaders place their own ambitions above the needs of the countries they are supposed to serve."

Romeo & Juliet - 11th - 22nd June 2022

"Looking around the world today, we can still see the effects of learned and unfounded hatred. Despite this, countless groups and individuals continue to prove and advocate for the idea that this can be overcome. We believe that the story of ROMEO & JULIET, where hate is threatened by love, remains relevant as as reflection of both global and personal conflict.

This production of ROMEO & JULIET will tell the love story of two young women in the midst of a war. The Kaiserpfalz Ruins, a place of real historical violence, brings its own memory and magic to the stage as the venue for this play. We are excited for audiences, locals and visitors, to experience the Düsseldorf landmark in a new and dramatic spectacle, for a summer evening of 'Shakespeare am Rhein'."
