On a rainy Saturday that didn’t dampen any spirits, Düsseldorf marked Japantag and the 50th anniversary of the Bezirksvertretung 3 (district council) in Düsseldorf.
The official celebration for Stadtbezirk 3 took place at Bürgerhaus Bilk, warmly opened by District Mayor Dietmar Wolf and organized by the director of the Bezirksverwaltungsstelle 3, Christian Prahl.
Among the featured performances was a 30-minute program from English Theatre Düsseldorf, presented by Lars Evers from the Theaterfabrik: starting with Philipp-Alfons Heitmann from Smash'ngrab Theatre who captivated the audience with a monologue from Richard III. He was followed by Mike McAlpine, a Fest Ensemble member of English Theatre Düsseldorf, who performed a sharp and politically funny stand-up act.
Mike has starred in numerous ETD productions including The Odd Couple, The Mousetrap, Educating Rita and The Messiah. This September, he will perform his new solo show, First Class Ticket, with our friends at the International English Library.
The Bürgerhaus Bilk and the surrounding plaza were buzzing with activity—festival booths, music performances with choirs, orchestras and Jazz, powerful street dancers - an intergenerational celebration. Despite the weather, it was a vibrant neighborhood event.
English Theatre Düsseldorf also announced a new rehearsal space for Düsseldorf’s Freie Szene, supported by the Kulturamt Düsseldorf. Located in Bilk, at Benzenbergstraße 60, the space is open to professional artists working in theatre, dance, and performance art. Contact www.english-theatre-duesseldorf.de
The space is available in flexible time blocks and has been made especially affordable for the independent dance/theatre scene. Interested artists can find more information at www.freieszene.de or contact English Theatre Düsseldorf directly.
